Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Headstone design in New Jersey must be developed within the dimensional constraints of the receiving cemetery. Before any design work begins, Granite Design Guide confirms the cemetery's current regulations — maximum height, base dimensions, and any restrictions on imagery. This ensures the design we develop together is installable without modification.

Foundation Requirements

Foundation requirements in New Jersey cemeteries apply to any upright headstone regardless of design. Our installation crew prepares concrete foundations to the cemetery's stated specification, then sets the finished stone on the cured base with mechanical leveling equipment.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Some New Jersey faith-affiliated cemeteries restrict certain design elements — figurative imagery, portrait work, or specific symbols — based on denomination. Granite Design Guide confirms design suitability with the cemetery before finalizing any design that includes potentially restricted elements.

Headstone Design

Granite headstone design at Granite Design Guide covers the full spectrum of what the material can hold: from traditional name-and-dates lettering in a classic serif font to deeply carved portrait work, from simple geometric borders to detailed nature scenes featuring New Jersey wildlife and landscapes. The design process begins with your family's vision and reference materials — photographs, sketches, symbols, inspirations — and moves through a scaled drawing that you approve before any stone is touched. Design elements that translate well to granite include portrait etchings in black granite (where tonal depth creates photographic contrast), raised-relief Celtic knotwork on gray granite, nature-based imagery such as oak trees, eagles, and coastal scenes, and typography that varies in scale and style to create visual hierarchy. What makes a headstone design work — regardless of how complex or how simple it is — is proportion, balance, and specificity to the person being remembered.

Granite Options

Granite selection influences design outcomes significantly. India Black is the most responsive canvas for portrait work and fine lettering, producing maximum contrast. Mountain Gray's natural crystalline texture adds visual interest to designs that benefit from surface variation. Dakota Mahogany's warm character suits traditional and nature-based compositions. All are American-made granite available for comparison at our Morris County showroom.

Custom Design Process

The custom design process at Granite Design Guide is structured to give you confidence before any carving begins. Consultations in English, Russian, or Polish gather your references and preferences. Our design team produces a scaled drawing showing all elements in correct proportion. You review and approve the drawing. Only then does the granite enter our workshop.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Six stages govern every granite headstone design at Granite Design Guide. Consultation: reference gathering and design discussion. Scaled drawing: every element in correct proportion, produced for your approval. Granite preparation: American-made stone selected and inspected. Hand-carving: artisans execute the approved design using pneumatic and hand tools. Finishing: fills, polish, inspection. Installation: our crew delivers, sets, levels, and photographs the completed monument.

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“I wanted a design that captured my sister's love of the ocean — waves, a lighthouse, her name in a script that felt like her handwriting. Granite Design Guide produced it exactly. The design is completely specific to her and carved with real skill.” — Christine, Monmouth County NJ
